Asteroid Impact Visual Console
This module allows users to adjust asteroid parameters — diameter, density, and velocity — to visualize estimated effects including impact energy, crater diameter, and blast damage radius. (View Console)
Scientific Basis
The console models asteroid impacts using classical physics and empirical scaling laws. When a body enters at hypervelocity speeds, the kinetic energy is transferred rapidly on impact, producing shock waves, excavation, and deformation in the target surface. These processes can be estimated with simplified scaling relationships derived from laboratory experiments and planetary geology.
Key Equations
E_k = ½ m v² — Kinetic energy of the impactor
m = ρ × 4/3 π (d/2)³ — Mass of a spherical asteroid

Learning Outcomes
Quantify how kinetic energy scales with impactor mass and velocity.
Understand the dependence of surface effects on physical properties of the impactor (size, density).
Learn simplified crater scaling laws used in planetary geology.
Develop intuition about how impact parameters translate into real-world hazards such as blast radius and ground disruption.
Glossary
Kinetic energy: Energy of motion, calculated as E = ½mv².
Crater scaling: Empirical formula relating impact energy to crater diameter.
Blast radius: Estimated distance over which pressure effects exceed a threshold.
Density (ρ): Mass per unit volume (kg/m³) of the impactor.
