γ=2.7 below knee (~3 PeV), 3.1 to ankle (~3 EeV), 2.7 above.

GZK cutoff at 6×10¹⁹ eV via pion-photoproduction on CMB (Greisen; Zatsepin & Kuzmin 1966).

Shower max: X_max=X₀·ln(E/E_c), X₀=36.7 g/cm², E_c=87 MeV.

  • EM shower — e±, γ from π⁰ decay
  • Muons — from π±/K± decay; penetrate to ground via relativistic time dilation
  • Hadrons — p, n, π± driving shower growth
  • X_max — altitude of shower max; composition-sensitive
  • Surface Array — Cherenkov/scintillator tanks; samples lateral distribution
  • Fluorescence — UV telescope images N₂ excitation along shower track
  • Underground Muon — muon count below rock; discriminates composition
